CHENNAI: A total of 190 tonne of waste was collected by the Greater Chennai Corporation during the weekend after immersion of Ganesha statues by devotees.
Among the waste collected, 60% was food, 4.5% was plastic, 6.3% flowers and the remaining were mixed waste.
According to a statement, the GCC‘s garbage collection contractor Urbaser Sumeet deployed 220 men to clean up the beaches around Foreshore Estate and Marina.
Some statues which washed ashore were again immersed.
