Youth kills mother at home, turns up at police station to surrender in West Bengal’s Rajarhat | Kolkata News

KOLKATA: A youth in his late 20s turned up at Narayanpur police station in Rajarhat near Greater Kolkata in West Bengal’s North 24 Pargana district claiming he had killed his mother and that the body was lying at home.
Police immediately arrested Somnath Santra who was ready to surrender and found the lifeless body of Lakshmi Santra (49) at the bed of his home.
The incident happened early on Tuesday when Santra was questioned by police while he was roaming outside the police station.
He was called inside by the duty officer when he confessed to the crime.
Police said Santra has confessed that he was jobless and that his wife had left him recently which led him to depression and he used to fight often with his mother.
Police learned on Monday night, a fight had ensued between the two over money.
The woman used to work at a private firm and Somnath had been demanding more money from the mother, who instead asked her to get a job himself which led to a scuffle.
“The man has said, there was a heated altercation between the two which made him lose his cool and he strangled his mother. He claims he didn’t intend to kill her but lost control of his grip in the fit of rage and by the time he had let go of the woman’s neck, she collapsed on the floor, lifeless,” said an officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate.
Police have booked the man for murder and are probing whether the murder was committed out of rage or if there was some other motive.
