MADURAI: A gang hacked a woman to death at Kattarankulam in Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu after attacking the driver of an autorickshaw she was travelling in on Sunday night.
The murdered woman has been identified as M Velladuraichi, 28, of Jameenthevarkulam. She was going to attend a family function at Kumarareddiapuram when the autorickshaw was intercepted by a gang.
According to police sources, Velladuraichi called autorickshaw driver Shanmugaraja. She left after informing her husband Manikandan and two children. While the vehicle was moving on the Kalampatti – Vittilapuram Road, a gang stopped the vehicle and attacked Shanmugaraja. He fell unconscious.
The gang hacked Velladuraichi with sickles. When Shanmugaraja regained consciousness around 1am on Monday, he found that the woman was dead. He alerted the Nalattinpudur police. Kovilpatti DSP Venkatesh and the Nalattinpudur police rushed to the spot. They rescued Shanmugaraja who had sustained a head injury and admitted him to Kovilpatti Government Hospital. Velladuraichi’s body was sent for postmortem.
During the interrogation, Shanmugaraja told police that Velladuraichi used to hire his autorickshaw and had his mobile number. She asked him to drop her at Kattarankulam and they were intercepted by a man who was riding on a two-wheeler in the wilderness. The man asked them if they had seen a goat he was looking for and let them leave after they told him that they had not seen any.
A few metres away, he intercepted the autorickshaw again with more people and attacked him. The police were wondering why the autorickshaw driver had taken a lonely road though there was a main road via Kattarankulam. Further investigation was under way.
The Nalattinpudur police registered a case.
