KOLKATA: Four persons were arrested at SSKM Hospital premises during Kolkata Police’s ongoing raids against medical touts between Sunday evening and Monday. They were allegedly defraudig patients and their families by promising them hospital admission in exchange for money.
Three of the arrested persons — Abhishek Mullick, Dev Mullick and Ajay Valmiki — are residents of Bhowanipore. It has been alleged that the accused had connections with the Group D employees and contractual staff at the hospital. Another tout, Surinder Kumar (30) of 244, AJC Bose Road, was also nabbed. Cops said he charged anything between Rs 2,000 and Rs 25,000 from patients. They reportedly took ornaments and other valuables from those who didn’t have cash.
Earlier, two touts were arrested at NRS Hospital and a tout racket operating at Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital was busted. An officer said people fall prey to touts despite advisories being issued to caution them.

A corruption racket at the regional transport office in Gurgaon has been uncovered, with agents paying off officials to expedite applications and clear files. The racket, which is estimated to have been running for several years, collected around Rs 5-6 crore ($700,000 – $840,000) every month. Agents would offer to assist applicants with the process in exchange for a commission. The officials involved would keep an Excel sheet to track the agents and their payments. A special investigation team has been formed to further investigate the matter.
