Rs 14.7 crore sanctioned for subway construction in Odisha’s Balasore | Bhubaneswar News

BHUBANESWAR: The Railway Board has sanctioned a fund of Rs 14.7 crore for construction of subway near Nidhipanda bridge in Balasore district. It is an important bridge in Haldipada-Balasore section of Kharagpur-Bhadrak section.
During a meeting on June 21, local people had urged railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who was on a visit to the district, to construct a subway near Nidhipanda bridge (Bridge No 259). It was a long pending demand of the locals.
Vaishnaw had assured the villagers to resolve the matter. The ‘designing team’ of the Railways had immediately prepared the design for the subway which was approved by the competent authority.
The area gets waterlogged during monsoon and the crossing under the bridge becomes unapproachable cutting connectivity to villages. To solve this problem, a survey was immediately conducted for provision of alternate, safe arrangement for vehicular traffic as well as pedestrians.
A subway of five metre in width and five metre height has been proposed at the approach of the bridge at Kharagpur end.
“This subway will be used for passing all kinds of vehicles including heavy vehicles. The construction work will commence soon and will fulfil the demand of local people,” said a press release issued by the East Coast Railway (ECoR) here on Thursday.
As the area is prone to waterlogging during monsoon, a second subway has been proposed having dimensions of 4m width X 2.7m height. It will be about 1.6m above the bed level of the bridge and will act as an all-weather road even in times of heavy water discharges, said the ECoR sources.
