CHENNAI: A history-sheeter, who attempted to hoodwink escorting policemen and tried to escape, was shot at and nabbed by the Chengalpet police on Thursday. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday near Mamandur in Kancheepuram district. The history-sheeter and A-Plus category rowdy, P Thanikachalam, 36, of Mariyamman Koil Street in Tiruvallur district, suffered injuries on his right knee and arm.
Thanikachalam was involved in 17 cases including murder, attempt to murder, dacoity and robbery cases registered by police in Tiruvallur, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, Tiruvarur, Virudhunagar and Tuticorin districts. As a non-bailable warrant had been issued against by a trial court in Cheyyur after he had failed to appear before court in connection with a robbery case registered by the Chithamur police, special team was formed to arrest him. A special team headed by Chengalpet taluk inspector Pughal and sub-inspectors Raja and Pradeep was formed. The team nabbed the history-sheeter from near Porur at 8.15pm on Wednesday.
He was taken to SRMC police station and was later taken to Chengalpet police station at 10.30pm. After conducting inquiries, the team took Thanikachalam to Chithamur police station around 1.10am on Thursday. While the police team was crossing Laurel Mall on GST Road near Mamandur, Thanikachalam requested them to halt the vehicle to attend to nature’s call.
Once the vehicle was stopped, he pushed the policemen away and attempted to escape, prompting them to open fire and catch him,” said V Sai Praneeth, Superintendent of Police, Chengalpet district. The man, who suffered injuries, was rushed to Chengalpet Government hospital from where he was shifted to Stanley Government hospital in Chennai. The Padalam police registered a new case against Thanikachalam for preventing government servants from discharging their duty and attacking the police.
