IMPHAL: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested four people and detained two juveniles, following an investigation into the alleged abduction and killing of two students—- Phijam Hemanjit (20) and Hijam Linthoingambi (17) who were last seen together on a motorbike on July 6.
The accused persons arrested by CBI are – Paominlun Haokip, S Malsawn Haokip, Lhingneichong Baite and Tinnuphing.
All of them are being brought from Imphal to Guwahati by CBI, CM Biren Singh said in a news conference here, on Sunday evening. The four arrested include the wife of the main accused, sources added.
“A combined team of CBI, Army, Assam Rifles and state security forces today arrested four suspected people in connection with the murder of two young students. They have been arrested from Churachandpur district,” said Biren, calling it a major breakthrough to the alleged killing of the two students from Imphal.
Sources said the two juveniles, daughters of the main accused, are aged 11 and 9 years. Though they were detained, were later released.
The families of the two students believe that their wards have been killed by armed militants.
According to sources, all the accused have been moved to Imphal airport and later the CBI team brought them to Guwahati in a special flight in the evening.
The CBI has been tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding their disappearance and find out the culprits behind their ‘killing’.
A special CBI team headed by special director Ajay Bhatnagar has been camping in Imphal since September 27.
A few days ago, unrest in Imphal escalated when images of the alleged killings of two students went viral on social media. Following an attempt to attack the Chief Minister’s residence at Luwangshangbam in Imphal West, there have been incidents of clashes between security forces and protests around the valley where many students’ protestors were fatally injured when mobs turned ugly after Central Armed Police Force used “pellet guns”.
