NAVI MUMBAI: The NMMC commissioner, Rajesh Narvekar, has issued notices to the civic engineers responsible for the Morbe Dam upkeep, after a few BJP politicians visited the dam site without permission on Sunday to perform jal puja since the dam waters had started overflowing on account of a good monsoon.
BJP leader Sanjeev Naik, the first mayor of Navi Mumbai, and others performed puja at the dam and threw flowers and coconuts into the water.
While environmentalists have objected to the throwing of puja material into the dam, the civic chief Narvekar told TOI: “The politicians did not take the necessary permisson to ener the Morbe Dam area to perform puja. Hence, I have issued notices to the civic engineers concerned.”
When TOI contacted Naik for his comment, his aide, S Nitesh, said: “During traditional rituals, devotees do drop nirmalaya (puja material) into the water out of faith.”
