Mumbai and outskirts to come alive with annual garba events from Sunday onward | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Barely three days are left for garba enthusiasts to put on their dancing shoes as the nine-day festival of Sharadiya Navratra starts Sunday October 15.
With Covid restrictions a thing of the past, the dancing circuit promises to be exciting. Top notch artistes not only from the city but also from Gujarat are scheduled to perform at grand events in suburban Mumbai and city outskirts.
Musa Paik, Preeti-Pinky, Falguni Pathak, Parthiv Gohil, and Gujarat’s prominent folk artiste Geeta Rabari, will rehearse their acts this week. Political organisers, mainly saffron parties, are taking the lead in hosting musical events ahead of General Election 2024.
Versatile singer Musa Paik, a leading garba artiste of four decades’ standing, will perform at Lotus Ground in Mira Bhayander at an event organised by BJP leader Narendra Mehta. In years when Ramzan and Navratri coincide, Paik, a practising Muslim, observes the ‘roza’ during the day and performs garba after dusk, causing spectators to marvel at the beautiful confluence of cultures.
Residents of Mira Bhayander will also get to savour the Preety-Pinky garba at MBMC Ground near Seven Square School. The sisters will grant free entry to the public. Preety said, “We did not charge a penny for our performance in 2022 either, since families were facing financial stress after the Covid lockdown. This year too, we wanted public entry to be free and the organisers agreed.” Prior registration is mandatory, though. The organiser of this event is Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MLA Pratap Sarnaik.
At NESCO Centre in Goregaon, singer Parthiv Gohil is the star of the ‘Rangilo Re’ garba. He said, “The venue which can accommodate 8,000-10,000 people spans 1,66,000 sq ft of dancing area. The entire area is laid out with carpets for dandiya enthusiasts.” Parthiv focuses on traditional music which binds young and old, Gujarati and cosmopolitan visitors in a common thread.
Meanwhile Falguni Pathak will perform at Pramod Mahajan Sports Complex in Borivli at a garba supported by BJP MP Gopal Shetty. Organiser Santosh Singh said, “Falguni knows the pulse of Mumbaikars. She performs Marathi abhangs too and people enjoy the chants of ‘Vitthal Vitthal’.”
