THANE: Nineteen years after a homemaker was raped, a rickshaw driver has been sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) by the district court in Thane. Additional Sessions Judge Dr Rachna R Tehra convicted the accused Ramashankar Shukla, 52, and imposed a fine of Rs 5,500.
Prosecutor EB Dhamal, informed the court that the victim lived in Nerul in Navi Mumbai and the accused also resided in the neighbourhood.
It was on the intervening night of August 30/31, 2004 at around 1 am when the victim’s husband had gone out for work, the accused intruded into the house and raped the victim then aged 25, the prosecution told the court. The victim narrated the incident to her husband when he returned home at around 2 after which a police complaint was filed.
A total of six prosecution witnesses were examined in the case and the court accepted the deposition of the witnesses and also based on the medical evidence held the accused guilty.
