CHENNAI: The city and its suburbs received heavy rain accompanied by sudden strong gusts on Saturday evening. Weathermen said the intensity of rainfall may increase in the coming days.
IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over some areas of the city and the suburbs for the next two days. Bloggers said Saturday’s rain spell could repeat again on Sunday evening. On Saturday evening, dark clouds loomed over core localities in the city.
The sudden rain continued for nearly 20 minutes accompanied by gusts of wind which caused branches to break. After a break for nearly four hours, heavy rainfall lashed many areas again in the night.
Till 7.30pm, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 10mm and 8.2mm. The rain gauge at NIOT Pallikaranai recorded 33.8mm, YMCA Nandanam 21mm and Anna University 12.5mm.
N Senthamarai Kannan, director of IMD’s regional weather forecasting centre, said the sudden gust during the evening spells was brought by the storms that formed due to wind convergence.
“The northwesterly and southwesterly winds are converging leading to convective rainfall. There are chances of moderate intensity rainfall in the city for the next two days. There could be one or two heavy spells as well,” he said.
As of Saturday, Chennai district has recorded 600.2mm since June 1, which is 63% above normal. Kanchipuram has recorded 524.4mm during the same period, which is 32% above normal. And, 426.1mm rainfall was recorded in Chengalpet since June 1, which is 27% excess. Tiruvallur has recorded 545.9mm, which is 40% above normal.
Tamil Nadu as a whole has recorded 265.2mm during the same period, which is 1% below normal.
