GURGAON: Pedestrians and motorists are forced to wade through stagnant sewage water and bear its awful stench in Sector 46.
According to the residents, the sewer lines have been clogged in several pockets in the area for months now, resulting in wastewater overflowing on to roads, vacant plots and into green belts. Apart from an eyesore, stagnant water is a serious health hazard and a breeding ground for mosquitoes, residents say, accusing the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon of inaction despite multiple complaints.
BS Lohchab, RWA vicepresident of Sector 46, said that sewage is inundating streets and the market area too. “This area does not look like a well-planned sector. Residents are compelled to keep their windows and balcony doors shut due to the foul smell. Stagnant water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Also, some of the sewer lines are connected to the stormwater drain, which should be disconnected immediately as the drinking water line runs parallel to it and may get contaminated,” he said.
From broken sewer chambers to choked pipelines, the sector, developed two decades ago, needs an infrastructure upgrade, he added. Rajkumar Yadav, RWA president said, “Overflowing of sewer has been a perennial problem. Earlier, after complaining, the problem used to be resolved for a few days. This time, sewage started overflowing within a few hours after the MCG staff cleaned it. We have even met the MCG commissioner,” Yadav said.
Meanwhile, a senior MCG official said that they have received the complaint. “I have already directed officials to attend to the problem on priority. However, we are working to get the lasting solution too and preparing estimates for the same,” the official said.
