One person died from an alleged bullet wound during clashes Thursday in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) on Ram Navami and scores of others were injured in skirmishes in Bengal’s Howrah and Gujarat’s Vadodara. In Sambhajinagar, 14 policemen were wounded and 13 vehicles – including those of cops – torched as two groups indulged in stone pelting and arson during clashes over an objectionable slogan in Kiradpura area of the city in the wee hours of Thursday.
The police had to fire 11 rounds, besides using tear gas and plastic bullets, to quell the rioting mobs. Inspector Ashok Bhandare told TOI: “One of the injured, who had sustained a bullet injury and had to be put on life support, succumbed to his injury on Thursday evening.” The son of the deceased said he was shot near their apartment’s gate while stepping out for prayers.
Over 500 people have been booked on charges of rioting, the police said.
