KOLKATA: The detective department recently raided a fake call centre that was spread over three floors at Chowringhee – in the heart of the city – which targeted senior citizens from Australia.
A total of 40 employees, five of them women, have been arrested by the Anti-Rowdy Section. Fifty desktops, six hard disks, 12 mobile phones, three routers, two servers and 50 IP phones have been seized from the spot so far. The tip-off, claimed sources, came from the Australian counterparts. Of late Kolkata Police has received inputs on fake call centres from US federal agencies, Canadian and Irish police forces too.
“The owners and tele-callers used to call Australian citizens and impersonated employees of top multinational e-commerce companies and internet service providers,” said joint CP (crime) Shankha Shubra Chakrabarty. “All the 40 accused were examined and found to be working there for a considerable period of time. We are identifying the owner used to control the call centres,” said an ARS officer.
