CHENNAI: A 55-year-old drunk man, who was fast asleep at his home in Chennai’s Kannagi Nagar on Wednesday night, died of asphyxiation after fire spread from a mosquito coil to his bedsheet.
The deceased has been identified as Moorthy, who was employed as a security guard at Santhome.
Moorthy reached home around 11pm on Wednesday. He was drunk. He lit a mosquito coil and slept.A spark from the coil fell on the bedsheet, and fire spread.
Neighbours noticed smoke billowing from his house and alerted police and fire and rescue services department.
The Kannagi Nagar police broke open the door and found the body of Moorthy.
