TRICHY: Around one lakh shops and commercial establishments remained closed in the delta districts on Wednesday following a total shutdown announced by the Cauvery Delta Protection Movement protesting against the Karnataka government’s failure to adhere to the orders of the Cauvery Water Management Authority and Supreme Court to release water for irrigation in the Cauvery river.
However, government and private buses operated as usual and educational institutions functioned without interruption. Normal life was not affected much due to the protest barring some incidents of road blockade undertaken by protesters including DMK cadres and alliance partners. Police arrested hundreds of them across the delta districts and released them in the evening. The protesting farmers in Trichy, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Pudukottai took out rallies and demonstrated in front of Union government offices.
