Building collapse incidents: KDMC appoint special team for survey of dangerous structures | Thane News

KALYAN: After two building collapse incidents within one month, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has taken proactive steps by appointing a Special Team to conduct a new survey of potentially hazardous buildings. This initiative aims to prevent further accidents in the municipal area.
In a recent tragic incident in Dombivli city, one dangerous building collapsed, resulting in the loss of two lives and one person being injured. Another building, Laxmi Niwas, collapsed, but fortunately, many residents were able to evacuate in time, thanks to a vigilant resident who noticed a crack in the structure and alerted others.
Upon investigation, officials discovered that Laxmi Niwas building, which collapsed, was not listed as a dangerous building. This revelation prompted the KDMC to initiate a fresh survey.
As per the directives of the Municipal Commissioner, a special team comprising a Sub-Engineer from the Construction Department, a Surveyor from the Town Planning Department, a Section Clerk from the Property Department, and a Station/Sub-station Officer from the Fire Department will be established in all 10 wards of KDMC. Their primary objective will be to identify potentially hazardous buildings and mitigate the risks of collapse.
These teams will possess the necessary technical expertise to accurately assess the safety of buildings within the municipal area.
Mangesh Chitale, the Additional Municipal Commissioner of KDMC, stated, “The team has been instructed to commence their work immediately and provide daily reports to the additional commissioner, who will then compile a consolidated report for headquarters.”
Chitale further emphasized, “The recent collapses in Dombivli involved one building that had been previously identified as dangerous through a prior survey. However, the other building was not on the list of hazardous structures, prompting KDMC to initiate this new survey.”
The KDMC has also urged ward officers to take appropriate measures in accordance with established provisions for dealing with newly identified dangerous buildings.
