THANE: The father of an dead eight-month-old baby boy managed to evade the security and fled from the Kalwa CSM Hospital facility with his body in Thane on Friday morning after doctors insisted on post-mortem report of the baby, the police said.
The baby was brought in a semi-conscious state around 11pm on Thursday. The baby was initially admitted to a private hospital for respiratory ailments but the family later shifted him to Kalwa CSM. The baby was admitted to the ICU but he died within hours of admission, Dr Rakesh Barot, dean at the CSM hospital said citing preliminary observations.
Hospital staff hinted the baby may have been administered overdose of medications and was brought to the hospital in a critical condition. A post-mortem report however was awaited which would reveal the cause of death.
Accordingly, the father was alerted Friday morning and told that a post-mortem would have to be conducted on the baby. This apparently scared the him who then stealthily picked up the boy’s body with the intravenous kit still attached to it and escaped around 7am, officials said based on initial information.
“The man was frisked by the security but he told the guard he was taking the baby for an X-ray examination. It was only after one of the ICU nurses noticed the baby missing and spotted the man escaping that she raised an alarm.
However, by the time the staff could catch the man, he had already boarded an auto waiting outside – probably hired in advance- and escaped,” said the official.
The staff tried in vain to chase the auto following which the hospital administration approached the Kalwa police station that tracked the man based on his mobile phone location to Shil Daighar and brought him back with the body by 11am.
