SALEM/ CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said chief minister M K Stalin‘s attempts to scuttle the growth of his party through false cases would fail and the opposition party would bounce back to power.
Addressing the party cadres on Sunday at Attur in Salem, on his maiden visit to hometown Salem after being elected as the party general secretary, EPS said that there was a high likelihood of assembly elections being held for Tamil Nadu along with the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. If that happens, the AIADMK would return to power in 2024, he said.
EPS said that ‘false cases foisted by Stalin’ on AIADMK leaders would neither deter him nor curtail the growth of the party. He said Stalin was bound to fail in his attempts, ‘even if he takes multiple avatars.’
“The AIADMK has never feared false cases. We will foil such designs legally,” he said. On the other hand, those who intend to destroy the AIADMK would only suffer destruction, he said. Taking a dig at his rival O Panneerselvam, EPS alleged that those who enjoyed power in the AIADMK are now working for the benefit of the DMK. “DMK’s B Team members are also set to lose in this battle to weaken the AIADMK,” EPS said in an indirect attack on OPS.
EPS who started his on-road journey to Salem from Chennai was given rousing receptions by AIADMK cadres who shouted ‘niranthara pothu seyalalar’ (permanent general secretary) and ‘varungala muthalamaichar’ (future chief minister) in many places.
The ceremonies and rituals started right from the doorsteps of his Greenways Road residence in Chennai, where musicians started playing ‘auspicious music’ when he stepped out and women performed the traditional ‘aarathi’. Coconuts with camphor lit on them were shown before him and were broken to ward of the evil eye.
The AIADMK cadre had lined up along the road with flowers and garlands to welcome him. Stages were also erected in many places like Guindy, Mamandur and Tambaram. EPS stopped his convoy to scale up the stage and waved at the cadres.
In a statement issued earlier in the day, EPS thanked the cadres and functionaries for electing him as the general secretary of AIADMK.
