PUNE: Four persons died on the spot when the compact SUV they were travelling in first hit a median before veering to the extreme left to crash into a stationary truck near the Urse toll post around 40km from Pune on the Pune-Mumbai expressway on Thursday evening.
The Pune-bound traffic on the expressway disrupted for some time after the accident.
“The victims included architect Mauli Babasaheb Dhumal from Katraj in Pune and his workers,” a police officer told TOI.
The police have identified the three workers as Ankesh Kumar Saket, Dharmendra Kumar and Shiyasaran Saket, all from Katraj. Dharmendra Kumar was driving the vehicle, the officer said.
The officer said that the accident occurred around 5.15pm, when they were returning to Pune from Mumbai. “The compact SUV was at the high-speed. due to which the driver might have lost control and it first hit the median. The vehicle then veered to the extreme left of the Pune corridor and crashed into the stationary truck,” the officer said.
She said that the truck had halted in the service lane of the expressway following some technical snag.
Teams including highway safety patrol, IRB, Devdoot and police reached the spot and removed the bodies from the mangled vehicle. The bodies were sent to the government hospital in Talegaon for the post-mortem.
