CHENNAI: The joint efforts of various government departments to unclog the Adyar river bank in Jaffarkhanpet area failed to evoke any response from the encroachers, as only eight of the total 455 families have agreed to accept rehabilitation package and move out.
All the eight families have been allotted tenements in Perumbakkam, constructed by the TN Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB).
A senior engineer from the Water Resources Department (WRD) said they began the evacuation process on John Kennedy Street in Jaffarkhanpet more than six months ago. However, it could not progress as scheduled due to interference from various political parties who instigated the people against the rehabilitation process proposed by the government departments.
Representatives from the government departments on Saturday held a meeting with the squatters and explained to them the need for them to move out. The Greater Chennai Corporation had completed the biometric collection process already. Following this, the TNUHDB also issued allocation letters to all those who agreed to move out and settle in the tenements allotted to them at Perumbakkam. However, at the last minute, a large number of residents have refused to accept the offer, said the official.
A Greater Chennai Corporation said it has been decided to hold meetings to convince the residents to move to the tenements in Perumbakkam. It will take a longer time to convince 447 families to evacuate from the Adyar river banks.

RMC fails to stop encroachers, squatters from occupying city
The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) in India is struggling to curb illegal settlements and encroachments due to a manpower crunch. The RMC blamed corruption charges for the reduction in their anti-encroachment team from 30 to 17 members. Vendors conducting businesses outside designated markets are hindering smooth movement in the city, causing inconvenience to locals and festive shoppers. The RMC plans to take action against vendors who do not use their designated vending zones. The RMC is also seeking additional personnel from the government to address the issue effectively.
