New Delhi: Intensifying zero tolerance towards pollution violations, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has imposed fines totalling Rs 55 lakh in Dec against offenders involved in biomass burning, illegal dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste, and other violations.In one week, the civic body has imposed challans worth Rs 34 lakh against those flouting Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) IV norms, under which all construction and demolition activities are prohibited.As part of its enforcement drives, MCD teams physically verified 1,792 construction sites and issued 771 challans wherever violations were detected. In Nov, the civic body issued over 900 challans amounting to Rs 1.5 crore for similar offences. During the same period, 34 illegal jeans dyeing units were found violating pollution control norms. They were sealed.Officials said intensive inspections are being done daily by 356 surveillance teams, comprising MCD officials, across all 12 zones between Dec 1 and 20.“These teams have checked illegal burning and issued challans to 420 violators for burning biomass and garbage. These actions resulted in penalties amounting to approximately Rs 11.7 lakh in Dec,” an official said.MCD said it has deployed additional machinery, sanitation workers and waste collection vehicles to clean garbage-vulnerable locations. Around 500 secondary collection points are being cleared nightly.Zonal officers have been directed to strictly implement the revised GRAP guidelines, officials said.Coordinated pollution-control efforts are under way with other agencies. Water sprinkling is being carried out on 18 roads, while 52 mechanical sweepers have been deployed too, along with jetting machines for washing arterial roads.
