MUMBAI: A video of rats eating into the food items stored in the pantry of LTT-Madgaon train has gone viral, thus raising question mark about the safety of the passengers who rely on on-board train catering services items during the journey.
The video was shot by a passenger at LTT on October 15. IRCTC has blamed CR for the issue as it claims that the yard in LTT ,where this rake is parked, is infested by rats in large numbers.
CR’s chief public relations officer Shivraj Manaspure confirmed the video is authentic but said that rodent control measures are regularly taken inside the coaches in the yard too.
In rodent control measures poison tablets are placed in the yard apart from mechanical traps and glue boards
However, many passengers have claimed that the quality of rodent control measures needs to audited to ensure that the contractors do a thorough job.
Kurla resident Jaineel Joshi said, “Even though such cases are highlighted regularly one social
media, things have not changed much. I will think twice before ordering food from the railway pantry.”
Reacting to the video, a social media user commented, “Railway authorities must seriously look into it. @AshwiniVaishnaw @IndianRailMedia It brings a bad name to the nation. A lot of foreign and national tourists travel to Goa for tourism purposes.”
Another social media user Sunita Lobo said, “Hygiene and maintaining hygienic conditions has never been our strong point. There is no time, money or inclination at any level to eliminate the food tasters either in this train or any other train I’m sure.@indianrail.”
The railways claims to have tightened the catering policy after the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report of 2017 but complaints about quality of food served in train can be found posted on social media by passengers frequently.
In its report, the CAG had observed that food articles unsuitable for human consumption, contaminated foodstuff, recycled foodstuff, packaged and bottled items past their shelf life and unauthorised brands of water bottles were offered for sale at stations.
