CHENNAI: TVS Group on Saturday unveiled a Rs 100crore corpus scholarship for Tamil Nadu’s engineering students to mark the centenary celebrations of T S Srinivasan, one of the key founders of the group.
The ‘TVS Cheema Scholarship’ was unveiled by Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin along with Venu Srinivasan, chairman emeritus, TVS Motor. It is designed to offer financial support to 500 deserving engineering students each year, particularly in mechanical engineering.
It will cover full tuition and boarding fee, besides study materials for the duration of the engineering course. The company said it intends to work with premier educational institutions, including IITs, NITs and others to bring this scholarship to deserving candidates.
“The TVS Group is an integral part of Tamil Nadu’s industrial development. The TVS 50 moped uplifted the lives of the poor and revolutionised the two-wheeler industry, especially in rural areas,” CM Stalin said at the event.
“My father laid the foundation of the values and principles of the group. All of us have grown up believing that TVS stands for Trust , Values, Service,” Venu Srinivasan, chairman emeritus, TVS Motor, said. “He was a pioneer of industrialisation in the state and a great visionary of the automotive sector,” he added.
TS Srinivasan, fondly known as Cheema, was the youngest son of TVS Group founder TV Sundaram Iyengar. He transformed TVS Group from a trading/services enterprise to a manufacturing giant in the 60s. A self-taught engineer, he helped develop the iconic TVS 50 moped.
At the event, TVS Motor also released ‘The Painted Stork’, a book chronicling the group’s conservation journey in Chennai.
