UDHAGAMANDALAM: A tiger, identified as MDT-37 that killed a tribal woman on Nov 24, was captured in the early hours of Thursday in a trap cage set up by the forest department off the Chemmanatham Road in the Mavanallah area of the Nilgiris district. The forest department has decided to send the tiger, aged around 15 years, to the rehabilitation centre at Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur, Chennai.Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (core area) deputy director M G Ganesan said it was the same tiger that was recorded by a camera trap in the area on Nov 25, a day after B Nagiammal, 65, of Mavanallah was killed. “The tiger was recorded by a camera in the area when it came in search of the remains of the woman. The stripes of the big cat confirmed its identity as Mudumalai Tiger 37 (MDT-37). This male tiger is estimated to be around 15 years old and has been roaming in a 3km radius of Mavanallah and Bokkapuram areas for the past three weeks,” Ganesan said.He said, “The tiger’s canines are worn out, and it has wounds on its nose and limbs. It appears that this big cat may have been pushed out of its territory by a young tiger.”Given the tiger’s age and physical condition, the chief wildlife warden instructed the team to relocate it to the rehabilitation centre at Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur. This marks the second time the forest department has captured a tiger without sedating it. Earlier, on Nov 30, a tiger (GFDT-32), which had killed more than 13 cattle in the Devarshola area of the Gudalur forest division, was captured in a trap cage and translocated to the core area of MTR.
