THANE: The city bid farewell to Lord Ganesha with loud processions, reaching ear-splitting noise levels of 110 decibels, as reported by anti-noise activists.
Dr Mahesh Bedekar, one such activist, measured noise levels across the city and noted that despite fewer processions this year, the excessive use of amplifiers and speaker walls contributed to the high noise levels.
Areas like Charai, Panchpakhadi, and Pokhran 2 experienced the loudest sound levels, with readings between 100-110 decibels, as processions and musical performances continued until midnight. In contrast, the Upvan Lake premises remained relatively quieter, registering 75 decibels around 10.45pm.
During the festivities, a total of 6,435 idols were immersed at various visarjan points in the city, with the majority (over 4,000) being immersed in artificial ponds and tanks. However, concerns were raised as more than 2,300 idols were still immersed in natural water bodies, allegedly in violation of CPCB guidelines.
Activists pointed out that the Thane corporation had not fully complied with CPCB norms, which mandate separate facilities for idol immersions even at visarjan ghats. This prompted discussions about potential legal action against the authorities to ensure environmental norms are followed.
