THANE: Thane’s Civic Commissioner, Abhijit Bangar, has issued a stern warning to municipal staff and a private electricity provider, cautioning them to be held accountable if they are found to have facilitated water and power connections to ongoing illegal construction projects in Kalwa, Mumbra, or Diva, as reported by officials.
The warning follows recent discussions surrounding the issue of illegal constructions in the district, particularly within Thane city and its suburbs.
The matter was raised during a district planning committee meeting and drew strong reactions from Union minister and BJP leader Kapil Patil, Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, among others. Furthermore, the NCP and Shiv Sena (UBT) later issued warnings, emphasizing that the civic administration would be held responsible if a situation akin to the Lucky compound incident were to recur.
Bangar underscored, “Both state regulations and court directives explicitly mandate refraining from providing essential facilities to illegal structures. We have observed instances where power and water connections have been extended to certain ongoing illegal constructions or those nearing completion. We have cautioned our staff, emphasizing potential disciplinary actions, including suspension, and have also communicated with the Torrent power company, alerting them to their responsibility should they provide power connections to such unauthorized structures,” as conveyed through a press statement.
