CHENNAI: A lovesick man drank poison at the house of a woman after she and her parents turned down his marriage proposal in Chengalpet on Friday.
Even as the shocked family was watching him emptying the poison he had brought along, Karthik, 30, attempted to stab the woman.
In the melee that followed, an aunt of the woman suffered a stab injury on her neck in her bid to foil his assault. Karthik died shortly thereafter at the Chengalpet government hospital.
Police said that Karthik and Yogapriya were employed at a chit fund company in Cheyyur.
Karthik had taken a liking to Yogapriya and expressed the same to her. But she did not reciprocate, police said. On Thursday, he went to her house to meet her parents and seek their daughter’s hand in marriage after learning that the family was making arrangements for her marriage. Her parents, however, turned down his proposal.
Perhaps anticipating this response, Karthik, who had brought poison with him, drank it right there. He then ran towards Yogapriya with a knife. In a reflex, Yogapriya’s aunt Jothi threw herself in front of him and foiled the stab attempt. In the process she suffered a stab injury, police said.
On information, police reached the spot and moved Karthik and Jothi to Chengalpet government hospital, where Karthik was declared dead and Jothi is under treatment. Further investigation is on.
