Students, residents to protest for closure of Tasmac shop near school | Chennai News

CHENNAI: As pleas from parents and students of a girls school on Mayor Basudev Street in Korukkupet to shift a Tasmac shop from the vicinity has not evoked any response, local residents as well as women and students’ have announced a protest demonstration on October 26.
When contacted, S Muthusamy, minister of prohibition, excise and molasses, said he was not aware of the complaint, and that action would be taken after review.
“Within 15 days to one month, the Tasmac outlet will be shifted from the area. Currently we are waiting for approval from the local police and the tahsildar,” said Senthil Kumar, north district manager of prohibition, excise and molasses.
The Tasmac shop is located 70 metres from the GCC girls’ higher secondary school. Girl students had to endure drunk men teasing and harassing them. When the situation became serious, the school management closed its back gate to prevent harassment by the men. Even residents feel unsafe to walk on that road. “Last week, a few drunk men stopped a lady and her child travelling on a bike in Mayor Basudev Street at 8.30pm and teased them,” recalled ward 42 councillor of Tondiarpet M Renuka. “The drunkards create a lot of ruckus. We want police to be stationed on both sides of the gate for the safety of children,” said Kanchana D, an advocate and parent of a Class XII student.
“As the school closed its rear gate due to this menace, students coming from Korukkupet have to walk for about 20 minutes to reach the front entrance,” said Renuka.
When TOI had reported the issue in August, the local MLA said it would be removed. “We have made multiple representations to Tasmac and the district collector. But no action has been taken,” said Renuka.
Residents and members of National Federation of Indian Women, All India Students’ Federation and All India Youth Federation have planned a protest near the Tasmac shop . School headmistress Kokila Grace did not comment on the issue.
