KOLKATA: With most of the big-budget and popular pujas across Salt Lake inaugurated, and revellers starting pandal-hopping, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has no more time to repair the damaged road stretches across Salt Lake before festivities.
Puja revellers and motorists are having a bumpy ride in most places, with patchwork done hastily on only a few main stretches in the last few days.
Several stretches in blocks, the canal-side main road, and several other roads remain in terrible shape as BMC authorities said that full-fledged road repair work will commence after the puja festivities conclude. In some places, the road surface has become uneven, with civic authorities hastily filling up large craters only with bricks, lacking a bitumen layer. Residents said that the patchwork was done in a hurried manner.
“Work should have been undertaken much earlier. It was only last weekend that civic authorities worked on only a few stretches, as the lanes inside the blocks remain in terrible shape in many places. It remains to be seen how long it will last, as such patchwork has been observed to wear out within three to four months,” said Pritam Biswas, a resident.
Civic authorities said they couldn’t begin patchwork earlier due to intermittent rains, which continued in patches till the first week of October. “Patchwork has been completed in as many stretches as possible within the limited time available. Full-fledged road repair work will be initiated after puja,” said a BMC roads department official.
