THANE: Thane residents seem to have given thumbs up to eco-friendly visarjan as a majority of the Bappa idols immersed on the fifth day of Ganeshotsav were done in artificial ponds, civic data reveals. As many as 11,536 or around 64% of the total 17,836 Ganpati and Gauri idols including 171 sarvajanik idols immersions were done at the 15 designated artificial ponds while 42 special tanks in the city saw 1,507 idols immersed till Sunday, said officials.
Observers said the trend seemed encouraging and also lauded chief minister Eknath Shinde and party colleague MLA Pratap Sarnaik who immersed their respective household Ganpati idols in an eco-friendly manner and set an example for others.
The overall response to the first day immersion at artificial ponds wasn’t encouraging in Thane. Meanwhile, the B-cabin collective visarjan procession organised by Thane BJP president Sanjay Waghule drew a lot of curiosity as household and sarvajanik idols from the locality were carried together in neatly aligned and decorated horse-driven buggies to the immersion points.
