Record 3,092 sans ticket caught in Thane station check | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: In a major crackdown on ticketless travel, Central Railway (CR) conducted a fortress check at Thane and caught 3,092 passengers for unauthorised and ticketless travel on Monday. This is the highest number of cases registered in a single day on suburban network across Indian Railway.
The last highest was at Andheri, where 2,693 passengers were caught and a cumulative fine of Rs 7.14 lakh was collected on October 3, by the Western Railway (WR). On September 30, a similar drive at Dadar on WR had detected 1,647 cases, making a recovery of Rs 4.22 lakh. In a fortress check, all entry and exit points are manned by ticket checking staff to ensure higher strike rate in identifying commuters travelling without tickets.
A CR official said, “On Monday, CR had deployed a total of 120 ticket checking staff and 30 Railway Protection Force Personnel. This resulted in 3,092 cases of ticketless or unauthorised travel. A fine of Rs 8.6 lakh was collected from offenders.”
With a high footfall of 6.54 lakh during peak hours, Thane has been ranked as the busiest suburban station in a survey commissioned by Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation in 2013. With 10 platforms, it caters to suburban services of the Main line and Trans-harbour corridor, besides long-distance trains. The station handles over 1,000 services every day.
