CHENNAI: The question foremost in the minds of cricket fans is whether rain will spoil the much-anticipated India-Australia World Cup match at the M A Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk on Sunday. While IMD has forecast light to moderate rain, private forecasters and bloggers said the rain clouds may not move towards Chepauk and the match may not get disrupted even if it rains as it may not be intense.
For the next 48 hours, IMD has forecast light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning over a few areas in the city and its suburbs. Temperatures may be around a maximum of 35C and a minimum of 26C. “There is a 50% chance of rain on Sunday. The intensity may be light to moderate,” said N Senthamarai Kannan, director, regional weather forecasting centre, IMD.
Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist of Skymet Weather, said the rain may only be in isolated drizzles that may not affect the match.
“The winds will be southeasterly at 10-15kmph speed. The weather will be warm and humid with temperatures touching 32C when the match starts and 29C night when it ends. There could be dew in the latter half, but chances of rain are less.”
Blogger Pradeep John, in a series of online posts, said the rain clouds would struggle to move towards Chepauk as the westerlies are weak. “Rain chances are there, but it won’t affect the match or reduce any overs. Very high chances for full match and result,” his post read.
Saturday was a mix of partly cloudy and sunny weather as temperatures touched a maximum of 34.8C in Nungambakkam and 35C in Meenambakkam, around 1.5C above normal. Showers in the evening left traces in Nungambakkam and 0.2mm in Meenambakkam.
