Kolkata: A 14-year-old student who had gone missing for over 24 hours after attending school on Monday was finally traced by New Town Police to a clothing store in a mall on Tuesday evening. The girl is a class-VIII student of a south Kolkata English-medium school. The police said she had last been spotted leaving the school premises around 5.30pm on Monday. Preliminary investigations suggest she had spent the night at a guest house.
“We have come to know that she had gone to the shop to buy new clothes for Durga Puja. However, she was not carrying money and was stopped by security guards at the exit. The mall administration informed New Town cops and they came to rescue her. Since Kolkata Police had issued a message to all neighbouring police stations about the missing girl, the New Town cops contacted their Kolkata Police counterparts and handed her over to them. The police and her family members rushed to New Town. We are trying to ascertain the exact sequence of events,” said an officer.
“The student had left through the school gates as usual after dismissal of classes on October 16. She usually meets her mother outside the school gate. On that day, instead of meeting her mother, it seems she walked away on her own. CCTV footage showed her walking across about half of the street outside the school. The school administration was worried about the child, and has cooperated with the police investigation,” the school said in a statement before she was traced by the cops.
Police said there are several unanswered questions. “We will speak to the child to ascertain where she spent the night. We have been told that she was at a guest house. We will speak to her kin too,” said an officer.
“No extortion or any call of any form was received by the girl’s family in the past 24 hours,” the officer added.
