Thane: The ongoing controversy over the alleged affiliations of drug Lalit Patil and his associate Salman Falke with some Thane politicians has stoked a fresh wave of tussle between the two NCP factions in Thane with each levelling accusations of proximity of rival camp leaders with the drug syndicate.
Observers have expressed surprise on how the allegations made by a Shiv Sena MLC in Mumbai have instantly led to squabbles between the Thane NCPfactions leading to marathon press briefings on the issue by both camps either defending or hurling a fresh bout of allegations at the other over the last two days.It is now being discussed if the controversy was a deliberate attempt to keep the groups pitted against each other at the micro level.
NCP (Ajit Pawar group) city president Anand Paranjape on Thursday accused senior leaders from the (Sharad Pawar) faction of backing the industry to flourish in the suburbs and demanded a thorough investigation in the matter. “We have zero tolerance towards drugs and will always request a thorough probe of those responsible in percolating the contraband in the suburbs,” he spoke at a media briefing over the issue on Friday.
Meanwhile, the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) city president Suhas Desai and former leader of opposition in Thane, Ashraf Pathan refuted the allegations. The duo, while addressing the media, shared photos of leaders from the rival faction seen posing with Falke and questioned their closeness. Pathan said the allegations by Kayande were baseless and welcomed any probe, provided, there was a blanket investigation on leaders from the rival faction too.

The Shinde faction requested more time to submit evidence, but the Uddhav faction objected. The next hearing will take place on November 2. The Shinde faction argues that evidence should be allowed to be presented, while the Uddhav faction believes that the Supreme Court’s order only requires a preliminary inquiry.
