Chennai: The government will hold at least 1,000 free health camps across the state on Sundays starting October 29 to screen people for common ailments during monsoon, said health minister Ma Subramanian on Saturday.
The camps will screen people for chikungunya, dengue, malaria, cholera and typhoid seen during the rainy season, he told reporters. “We are told there will be heavy rain on Sunday and Monday. We have ensured hospitals don’t flood,” he said. The state has stocked adequatemedicine and beds for patients who may fall ill during the monsoon. At least 10,000 camps will be conducted by the year-end, he added. The screening would help them initiate early treatment and prevent complications and death, said director of public health Dr T S Selva Vinayagam. “Besides it will also alert local and civic authorities about issues in a particular locality. They will be able to carry out contingency measures to prevent outbreaks,” he said. tnn

Its official: Beach volleyball players told to end camp
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has decided not to include volleyball and beach volleyball in the upcoming National Games in Goa due to the risk of possible litigation. The decision comes as the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) has been suspended since December 2019 and has two factions vying for control. The absence of a basis to determine the participating teams and the lack of time to organize fresh national championships were also factors in the decision. Goan players, who have been training for months, will now miss out on the opportunity to compete.
