PUDUCHERRY: The 15th legislative assembly of the Union territory of Puducherry, which convened for the fourth session on Wednesday, concluded within 25 minutes much to the chagrin of the members of the opposition parties – the DMK and the Congress.
The House passed resolutions thanking the Union government for granting approval to provide 10% quota for government school students in admission to medical, dental and ayurvedic courses in the Union territory, congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian Space Research Organization (Isro) scientists for the successful Chandrayan-3 mission and lauding Modi for holding the G20 summit in a successful manner.
Soon, MLAs from the opposition parties led by opposition leader R Siva (DMK) were up on their feet and demanded that speaker of the legislative assembly R Selvam allot time to discuss on various issues faced by different sections of people in the territory.
The opposition MLAs pointed out that the coalition All India NR Congress (AINRC)-BJP government had failed to fulfil its promise of providing financial assistance of Rs 1,000 per month to the women heads of the families and subsidy for LPG cylinders to all ration cardholders.
They also wanted to discuss the charges of chief minister N Rangasamy that chief secretary and other officials had been blocking welfare schemes of the government. However, the speaker requested them to take their seats and did not grant them permission for any discussion. He disconnected the mikes of the opposition members when they refused to heed to his advice, following which the DMK and Congress MLAs walked out of the House to condemn the speaker.
Earlier, BJP MLA P M L Kalyanasundaram and an independent MLA P Angalane, who extended support to the BJP party, created a flutter as they squatted on the steps leading to the assembly hall accusing the AINRC-BJP government of sidelining their constituencies while implementing several welfare schemes.
Kalyanasundaram was harsh on secretary and district collector E Vallavan and accused him of failing to execute any constructive projects in his constituency.
