THANE: The Raigad and Thane health departments have independently set up a probe seeking explanations in the incident where a pregnant woman from Neral was refused treatment at their respective “ill-equipped” facilities forcing her to travel to Thane.
The woman who had to endure excruciating pain for 12 hours, finally delivered a stillborn baby in an ambulance late on March 20 while on the way to the municipal run Kalwa hospital, nearly 70 kms away from her home. The Kalwa municipal hospital that attended to the woman registered the incident on March 21.
A day after TOI highlighted the incident, the Ulhasnagar Central hospital issued show cause notice to the on duty gynaecologist seeking his reply within 24 hours failing which a departmental enquiry would be initiated.
Dr Manohar Bansode, Chief Civil Surgeon told TOI, “I have issued show cause notice to the gynaecologist Dr Kasam Dalwai seeking his explanation as to why treatment was denied to the patient. Later, a special committee will analyse the same and further step will be initiated,” he said.
“We have initiated an enquiry in the incident that involves staff from different departments. Appropriate action will be taken only after the enquiry is done and report submitted by the members,” said Raigad civil surgeon, Dr Suhas Mane.
Meanwhile, the Raigad police registered an accidental death report in the incident late on Thursday. “We will wait for a report by the expert panel constituted by the Raigad civil surgeon that will probe any procedural lacunae on part of the attending doctor. We will accordingly investigate the matter further,” said Vijay Lagare, sub divisional police officer, Karjat.
