CHENNAI: The Chengalpet taluk police opened fire on a history-sheeter when he tried to escape from their custody in the early hours of Thursday. The incident happened at Mamandur in Kancheepuram district.
The history-sheeter, identified as P Thanikachalam, 36, of Mariyamman Koil Street in Tiruvallur district, suffered injuries on a knee and the right arm.
Thanikachalam was an A-plus category rowdy at Periyapalayam police station. He was involved in nearly 17 cases related to murder, murder attempts, dacoity and robbery registered at police stations in Tiruvallur, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, Tiruvarur, Virudhunagar and Tuticorin districts.
A special team was formed to arrest the man after a non-bailable warrant was issued by a court in Cheyyur since he had failed to appear before court in connection with a robbery case registered by the Sithamur police.
The special team headed by Chengalpet taluk inspector Pughal and SIs Raja and Pradeep was formed. The team nabbed the history-sheeter from near Porur at 8.15pm on Wednesday. He was taken to SRMC police station and was later taken to Chengalpet police station at 10.30pm.
After conducting inquiries, the team took Thanikachalam to Sithamur police station around 1.10am on Thursday. While they were crossing Laurel Mall on GST Road near Mamandur, Thanikachalam attacked the cops. He jumped off the police jeep and ran towards a scrap shop. The police shot him.
The man, who suffered injuries, was rushed to Chengalpet Government Hospital from where he was shifted to Stanley Government Hospital in Chennai.
The Padalam police registered a case in connection with the incident.
