NEW DELHI: In 2015, the Public Works Department (PWD) came up with the idea to ease the commute between Sarai Kale Khan and Malviya Nagar in south Delhi with a combination of infrastructure interventions that would include two new flyovers and the construction of a loop.
While the second flyover at Sarai Kale Khan ISBT has been opened to the public, the long-term project remains incomplete.
Work on the elevated road at Savitri Cinema, which continues to see congestion regularly, is yet to start. Here, similar to ISBT, PWD plans to construct a second flyover to provide relief to commuters moving towards Greater Kailash and Okhla. The existing flyover was constructed during the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The need for a second flyover was identified by authorities in 2016, after which a plan was prepared and approved by Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre, or UTTIPEC. However, there has been no further movement since then.
Currently, vehicles moving towards Nehru Place merge with the local traffic near Savitri Cinema. Nehru Place-bound traffic, after landing from Chirag Dilli flyover, is split three-way – towards Nehru Place, U-turn and the right turn.
Meanwhile, the intervention at Modi Mill flyover is also pending for more than a year due to lack of approval from the government, according to PWD officials. The department plans to widen the road on both the sides under the six-laneflyover and remove the traffic signal in front of the metrostation situated at the end ofits downward slope. Once the flyover is widened and integrated with Kalkaji flyover, the stretch would become one kilometre long and signal-free.
Currently, this small intersection sees heavy traffic jams due to vehicles coming from several sides, including Okhla mandi, Okhla Estate, Ashram and Sukhdev Vihar. The key stretch is also connected to NCR cities like Faridabad, Noida and Gurgaon, apart from Mathura Road, and is an important link to IGI Airport.
” We have sent the proposal for financial approvals from the government, but therehas been no clarity on the matter. Till there is no approval, we cannot go ahead with tenders for hiring architect consultants to prepare a detailed project report,” said a PWD official.
Earlier, during the inauguration of Sarai Kale Khan flyover, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had said that major flyover projects are in the pipeline and that the government is working on them.
