Chennai: City’s UHWCs are not without bright spots.
At West Jaffferkhnapet, the 26-year-old Dr S Santhoshi manages to put a smile on the face of patients. This explains why the centre in a low-income locality has an average footfall of about 120 patients a day, while the average UHWC outpatient number is about 30 across the city.
“She sees patients upto 9.30pm and most of our basic illness like cold, fever and body ache are addressed without delay. We don’t have to come back for the same issues again,” said N Mohan of Anna Main Road.
S Ravichandran, another resident who came with his child, said the nurse had a health record of previous checkups and the doctor follows-up from there. “It feels as good as a private clinic. The centre is also well-maintained,” he said. He added that even ECG facilities are done here.
Dr Santhoshi, who has five years of experience, said she once stayed back till 10pm for an emergency. “The centre is helpful since it is a poor people’s area. Every day, more than 100 people come. It is a happy feeling to treat them. The centre can be upgraded with more facilities,” she said.
