KOLKATA: The Kolkata Traffic Police has received 16 online complaints about excess fees being charged by parking attendants from New Market, Gariahat, Kidderpore, Dalhousie and hospitals off EM Bypass.
Lalbazar has also said a joint crackdown by local police and traffic guards will be carried out at these spots. “Since the KMC has a major role in keeping a check, we will be writing to them and seek their inputs in curbing the menace,” said an officer. The South Traffic guard launched a drive on Tuesday evening, following which a parking attendant was benched in the New Market area.
The complaints were made on the social media platform in response to police sharing a post in which it urged motorists to dial 100 whenever parking attendants demanded excess parking fees or misbehaves with them. The post generated 120-odd comments with some motorists even hailing cops for “sorting out issues”.
The New Market area found mention in multiple posts. “In the New Market area, opposite to Simpark, two-wheeler riders are asked to pay Rs 20 per hour. When I pointed out that this was not legal, the attendant told me to park at some place else. He said I need to pay the amount if I am planning to park at that place,” wrote Krishan Takian Sen.
“They are always over charging in the New Market area near Globe cinema and near Simpark Mall. The parking attendants target two-wheeler riders. They also do not give any money receipt, kindly look into this matter seriously,” wrote Sujoy Guin. “Much needed helpline. Please check New Market area, the lane beside Indian Museum especially where attendants are charging upto Rs 100 for a couple of hours, especially during Pujo season. Misbehavior is at its heights too,” wrote Akash Dasgupta. Other areas were mentioned in the complaints too. “Under the Gariahat flyover, they are charging like anything. It is very close to Gariahat police station. A traffic guard outpost is also there. Top officials should be posing as normal public to cross verify if genuinely any action is being taken,” wrote Chanchal Das.
“RG.Kar Hospital is a government property. They charge extra for two-wheelers, which is higher than corporation approved charges,” wrote Himadri Chakraborty. Police said that daily action is taken in all these areas. “We end up charging three to four attendants daily from market zones alone,” explained a senior officer.
