CHENNAI: The Chennai zonal unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has arrested three men for smuggling 3.9 kg of ephedrine, a controlled substance, from Chennai to Mumbai via Bengaluru.
Based on information, NCB sleuths secured one of them at Periamet in Chennai on March 25 (Saturday) and seized the drug, which he had hidden in three handbags and embroidery mats.
Based on his inputs, another man, resident of Ramanathapuram, was secured in Pune on Sunday with the help of the Railway Protection Force. NCB Madurai sub-zone personnel secured the third person in Trichy. He is a resident of Triplicane in Chennai.
NCB sleuths said that Ramanathapuram resident is the head of the gang and was arrested last year for attempting to smuggle a controlled substance to Australia. “He along with the Triplicane man arranged the contraband and tried to smuggle it to Mumbai via Bengaluru,” said the agency.
The trio were remanded in judicial custody.
