THANE: A constable — attached to the special protection unit in Mumbai — died hours later after he was found with serious injuries on the railway tracks between Taloja (in Raigad district) and Nilajhe (in Thane district) stations near Diva in Maharashtra on Wednesday morning, Thane railway police officials said.
The constable was not on duty at the time of the incident, officials said.
The railway police said they spotted the body of the constable, identified as Vaibhav Kadam, lying on the tracks near Taloja on the Panvel-bound line around 9am.
The police said prima facie they do not suspect any foul play and have registered a case of accidental death in the incident.
Meanwhile, BJP functionary Mohit Kamboj has suspected foul play in the incident and appealed to chief minister Eknath Shinde and deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis to initiate a probe in the incident.
He likened the mysterious death of Kadam to that of Mansukh Hiran and also claimed that the deceased constable was about to turn approver in an assault case.
It may be recalled that Kadam was part of the police cover provided to a former cabinet minister in the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government and was also accused in an assault case.
