THANE: The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) will set up a temporary advanced vehicle surveillance network at each of the five Mumbai entry points to monitor volume of vehicles passing through them, party officials said.
The development comes following discussion with chief minister Eknath Shinde and PWD minister Dada Bhuse last week over surveying traffic movement and analysing the possibility of reducing the toll burden at least for Thane-passing vehicles.
Avinash Jadhav, party Thane-Palghar president said the party met in Mumbai Saturday morning following which a road map for executing the initiative was drawn up.
“We have assigned a private company to install over 80 high-definitions at all the five entry-exit points which will be executed by Sunday and the monitoring will start by Monday. Each of these camera networks will be monitored by the agency 24×7 and will also be relayed to our backend team operating in each of the cities including Airoli and Thane. The cameras will map the registration number of the vehicles and the software will also be able to differentiate vehicles based on their RTO passing numbers too,” said Jadhav.
Jadhav said volunteers would work in eight hour shifts and compile data based on the movement of traffic through the toll nakas following which it would be compiled and sent to the party transport wing for further analysis. The idea is to reduce atleast one toll for Thane commuters, he said. The monitoring is likely to be done for 15 days and the cost of installing this network is around Rs 10 lakhs which will be borne by the party.
Interestingly, the party has found an unlikely supporter in BJP MLA Sanjay Kelkar who has also announced his support to the toll waiver for Thane residents on Saturday. “Thane commuters are unnecessarily taxed by the toll despite the majority travelling for short distances in Mumbai. I had met the then PWD minister Chandrakant Patil requesting a waiver and felt the state must consider reducing the burden on Thane residents,” he said.
