Minor, pal go for drive in car newly gifted to parents; both die in crash | Thane News

ULHASNAGAR: Two teenagers, one of them a minor, died after the car the two collegians were in had an accident in Ambernath late Tuesday evening. The younger teen, Manav Tharwani (17), was at the wheel, the police said, adding that he had gone for a late-night drive with his friend Kushal Thawani (18). Manav’s parents have claimed that they were not aware that their son had taken the car, the police said.
The vehicle, which had been newly acquired, was found smashed into a tree on Kalyan-Ambernath Road and was reduced to a heap of mangled metal. Locals who called up the police and helped extricate the two from the vehicle said both were badly injured. They were taken to Central Hospital, Ulhasnagar, where both were declared ‘brought dead’.
Manav’s elder sister, who is married, had recently gifted the car to their parents, it is learnt. The police said that Manav had left home, taken the car, picked up his friend and the two then drove towards Ambernath. Both lived in Ulhasnagar.
According to a relative, Manav, a class 11 student, had learnt to drive and used to get behind the wheel, especially when he went out with his friends without informing his parents.
Another relative said that Manav was good at studies and had quite a few aspirants. “It’s hard to believe that he is no more,” said the relative.
Manav’s family is related to Tharwani Builders which has a slew of real estate projects across Thane district. Manav’s father looks after construction work at some of the projects.
An accidental death report has been filed at Ambernath police station. Senior inspector Jagannath Kalaskar said that statements of the bereaved family members will be recorded once they are in a better position to talk about the tragedy.
