Chennai: Chennai city has suffered the maximum voter deletion because of heavy migration and shifting of residences, said the Greater Chennai Corporation commissioner J Kumaragurubaran on Friday.“Somebody may still live within the city, but in another constituency. These people can use Form 6 and apply through the booth level officers (BLOs) or online and get enrolled,” he said. The commissioner said 11 lakh Form-6 application for new voters to the BLOs. “We expect at least 10 lakh voters to get enrolled,” the commissioner said. People can submit Form 6 till Jan 18, he added.In the case of the 2.3 lakh people who were not present in the 2005 rolls, they need to submit additional proof before Feb 10. The final roll will be released on Feb 17.“Voters must have self-awareness to find their votes are missing and must get themselves added,” Kumaragurubaran said, adding that BLOs will be present in over 4,000 booths to distribute Form 6. People can also do it online, and the voter ID will come in two weeks, he said.The city has seen the deletion of more than 14.25 lakh names (35%) from the electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which kicked off last month.According to the draft rolls released on Friday, out of the 40,04,694 voters, enumeration forms of 25,79,676 people were received, while 14,25,018 were dropped. Among the deleted members, 1,56,555 were marked dead, while 12,22,164 shifted. Around 27,328 were absent, and 18,774 were double entries.Among the received forms, 2,37,619 voters weren’t present in the 2005 SIR. They will be getting notices to prove their identity. These voters can submit their Aadhaar proof to the BLO.Of the assembly segments within the city, Anna Nagar saw 42% deletion, with 1.18 lakh being removed out of the 2.8 lakh. In Velachery, 1.27 lakh voters (40%) were deleted out of the 3.17 lakh, while in T Nagar, 95,999 voters (40%) were deleted out of 2,35,497. Thousand Lights also saw 40% deletions, with 98,981 voters removed out of the 2,38,374 people.Virugambakkam saw 38% deletions, with 1,10,824 voters being removed out of the 2,85,947, while Harbour remained the smallest constituency with 1.1 lakh voters after 69,824 (38%) voters were removed.Chief Minister M K Stalin’s Kolathur constituency saw 35% removal, while the deputy chief minister’s Chepauk saw 37% removal. Sholinganallur constituency, which comes under Chengalpet district, saw around 30% votes (2.18 lakhs) being removed.People can find their names in the draft rolls SIR 2026 section at website. This website was glitchy as of 7pm on Friday.Speaking to reporters, AIADMK’s former minister D Jayakumar said the GCC has to set up more booths to help people. “People are confused as one family falls in four different booths. Officials should ensure this confusion is not there when people get enrolled again,” he said.DMK’s legal wing joint secretary K Chandru, who represented the party for Chennai’s draft roll release, said 14 lakh voters have been deleted without any explanation on how at least 12 lakhs have shifted. “Despite the extension, how did several lakh voters disappear?” he asked.BJP state secretary ‘Karate’ R Thiagarajan questioned how those who missed out on SIR can submit Form 6. “Form 6 is only for new voters. ECI seeks a declaration during applying if a voter did not have a vote elsewhere. In that case, those removed in SIR will already have a voter ID. How can they give a declaration that they don’t have a voter ID? I’ve raised this to the commissioner, who said he will verify with the ECI and get back,” he said.
