MCD issues 24 challans for dumping of C&D waste in Delhi | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: Intensifying its enforcement drive against people causing pollution to ensure environmental compliance, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has issued 24 challans amounting to Rs 8.2 lakh from October 6 to 21.
Officials said that the challans were imposed on sites for violating construction and demolition (C&D) guidelines.
MCD has formed 511 surveillance teams, comprising 1,064 officials, to check open burning, illegal construction, demolition waste dumping and dust on roads. It has also stationed 35 anti-smog guns at high rise buildings and landfills.
MCD has also provided 60 anti-smog guns to combat dust pollution in 13 hotspot areas, including Narela (2), Bawana (2), Mundka (6), Wazirpur (6), Rohini (4), RK Puram (4), Okhla (4), Jahangir Puri (4), Anand Vihar (12), Vivek Vihar (4), Punjabi Bagh (6), Mayapuri (2) and Dwarka (4).
Regarding internal roads, MCD oversees approximately 15,582 kilometres of colony roads (of 12 ft width), which are swept by approximately 57,500 sanitation workers.
To check the problem of illegal dumping of garbage and debris, mayor Shelly Oberoi also visited ward number 149 (Malviya Nagar) and interacted with the members of resident welfare associations.
“Some sites were identified where illegal C&D dumping was happening. Officials were asked to ensure the picking up of C&D waste lying in this area as well as other wards of Delhi. They were told that no negligence will be tolerated in cleaning the roads,” she said at a press conference.
The mayor also inspected the RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) centre established by MCD in Navjeevan Vihar under the ‘Meri Life, Mera Swachh Shahar’ campaign on Monday.
Reacting to the mayor’s statement, leader of opposition in MCD Raja Iqbal Singh alleged that ever since AAP took control of MCD, it has turned Delhi into a garbage capital. “There are 40% unauthorised colonies where garbage dumps are causing severe problems for citizens. Additionally, garbage dumps are scattered at various places in Delhi, and AAP is falsely claiming that it has removed 50% of the dumps,” he said.
