GUWAHATI: A Class XII student, who was appearing in the ongoing Council of Higher Secondary Examinations, Manipur, (CoHSEM), was shot dead in Kangpokpi district of the northeastern state on Saturday night, police said on Sunday. The examinations will conclude on April 1 with a paper on elective subjects.
The incident assumed significance in the backdrop of the announcement made by the Centre and later by the Manipur government that the ‘Disturbed Area Status’ has been removed from four more police stations to take the total to 17 in the state in a bid to withdraw the “draconian” Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, from these areas with effect from April 1. No police station in the Kangpokpi district was, however, included in the list where the status was removed.
The latest crime, according to the police, was committed by two bike-borne miscreants, who shot the 17-year-old at Motbung Bazar near his home.
The deceased, identified as Seigunlal Misao studying in Damdei Christian College, was at the market, barely 200 metres from his home when he was targeted around 8.30 pm. The assailants fled after committing the crime, police said. Talking to TOI, a police officer in Kangpokpi district said, “The boy was having a chat with one of his friends at Motbung Bazar when the miscreants, who probably came on a motorcycle, shot him from point-blank range.
He most probably died on the spot.” He said forensic experts reached the site at about 1 pm and the body was deposited at the RIMS mortuary in Imphal for autopsy. One empty cartridge of a 9 mm pistol and a bullet that ricocheted from the deceased were found on the spot, police said. They suspected that one of the bike-borne miscreants was a woman. An investigation is on and the possibility of militants being involved in the killing is being probed, police said. Kangpokpi DC Kengoo Zuringla said, “According to the village chief concerned, the boy was not politically active.” Meanwhile, the locals protested in the district against the killing.
