CHENNAI: Tambaram police arrested a man for cheating two people of 31 lakh under the pretext of getting them a job at Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). He was remanded to judicial custody on Saturday.
Police identified the accused as Sathyendra Nair, 50. Nair befriended the complainant Rathna Kumar, 30, when he frequently visited Kumar’s hotel in West Tambaram and claimed he was a contract worker with the IOC where Kumar wanted a job.
Later, Kumar paid 16.5 lakh in November 2020 for a job and as he was convinced by the job offer, Kumar introduced his friend Sriram who paid who also paid a sum of 14.8 lakh.
After getting the money, Nair started avoiding them. After the victims warned him of lodging a police complaint, Nair paid back a total of 1.5 lakh.
In December 2021, Nair went into hiding.
Though Kumar along with his friends tried to trace him, the hunt went in vain.
Since he could not trace him, Kumar lodged a complaint in June 2022, after which police registered a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust and nabbed him from Tambaram.
